Welcome to the 12 Song Challenge
[This welcome page will soon transform into more of a blog format, where we'll post news, challenges, videos and more for the 12 Song Challenge]
[This will be welcome video]
We're so glad you're here!
The 12 Song Challenge songwriting community is a wonderful place to be. Every month we'll send a new challenge to your inbox, we'll feature it on our podcast, and we'll post it on this page. We'll also keep you updated on new content, plus online and in-person events. And we've got a thriving Facebook group that you join in with right away.
Your part in this is to write a new song every month, share it with the other writers, and offer constructive feedback for at least three other songs. Do all of this by the end of the month, every month, and you're on course for finishers' prize, the incredible 12 Song Challenge Yearbook.
Remember, the focus here is on congregationally singable worship songs. You might have to define some of your own local parameters for that, but you know the kind of thing we mean. When we critique and feedback, we’ll all do it on that basis. It’s what we’re aiming for. It doesn’t mean we’ll hit the target every time, but it’s good to have one.
Also, the big goal here is to develop our songwriting through a disciplined creative habit. That's why we say it has to be a new song every month. Not an old one that happens to be on the theme.
Community Rules1) Songs are shared safely and ideas are offered freely. This is the way we always do things at Resound Worship. You post a song, it remains yours. Someone offers you an idea, a suggestion? It remains your song. You do the same for others, and we’re all freely contributing to make these the best songs they can be. 2) If you share a song for feedback, you take the time to contribute to other songs. That way we’re all helping each other. 3) Always be kind and generous, and remember that we come from different countries, cultures and church traditions. (This one's obvious, but it's nice to be reminded) |
JOINiNG AND USING OUR SLACK WORKSPACE
To share and feedback on songs, we use an online service called Slack. The great thing about Slack is that you can use it as a normal website or you can download the app to your phone, tablet or computer.
Many of us find we prefer to use a computer for posting songs, and a phone or tablet for commenting. But you'll probably figure out what seems easier for you. You can download the app from all the relevant app stores.
Here's the most important thing you need. Click the link to join the workspace:
When you sign up:
- use your real name, not a nickname or pseudonym
- upload a photo
There are a few other housekeeping rules that we all need to stick to, in order to make this thing run smoothly. With a lot of people involved it really helps to get these right. Take a couple of minutes to watch the videos below. They're very short and pretty simple, but they'll set you off in the right direction. NB Some of these are new for this year.
How to post a song
Main points:
- post only the title and the recording in the main post
- use a compressed audio format (ie mp3, m4a etc; no wavs, aifs or videos)
- add the lyrics and any other blurb in the first reply of your thread
- head over to the test channel and have a go (We'll delete everything in there before things kick off in earnest)
How to comment on a song
Main points:
- look for the speech bubble icon to open the thread (or tap the message)
- make sure the box you're about to write in includes the word 'reply', not 'message'
