Resound Worship is a ministry of the Song and Hymn Writers Foundation, a charity dedicated to publishing quality worship songs as well as training, resourcing and influencing worship songwriters from the grass roots to published composers. We’d really value your support.

We come to you in sorrow
and in shame,
we've failed to follow you again.
So humbly we confess
with this refrain:
Lord, have mercy.

The burden of our sin
we bring to you,
the things that were not pure or true.
For deeds that we have done,
or failed to do,
Lord, have mercy.

Because of who you are, O Lord,
we know that you are faithful to forgive us.
Because of who you are, O Lord,
because of who you are.

You wash away the stain
of every sin
and free us from the guilt within.
So trusting in this grace
we boldly sing:
Lord, have mercy.

Restore in us your image,
make us new,
and strengthen us to live for you,
bringing you the glory
that is due
for your mercy.

Because of who you are, O Lord,
we know that you are faithful to forgive us.
Because of who you are, O Lord,
we know that you won't hold our sins against us.
Because of who you are, O Lord,
because of who you are.

Having spent many years worshipping in Anglican churches, I'm very familiar with the corporate confession that forms part of the liturgy. The moment where, as we approach our holy God, we acknowledge our own failings and look to him for forgiveness. I wanted to write a song that performed the same function, that spoke not only of our penitence, but our trust in God to forgive us, change us and lead us onward. Having made some progress on the verses, I got together with Sam one morning, and he suggested writing a chorus based on Isaiah 43:25 which, in the Good News version, has God saying he will forgive "because of who I am".

There is much involved in our achieving our forgiveness through Christ - atonement, sacrifice, redemption etc - but behind everything God has done for us is his nature. Who he is. It is in his nature to forgive, he is loving, he is faithful and just. So we have confidence, because of who he is.
