In all the events of 2020 I found it hard to pray. I just didn't know what to say. Where could I start when I saw all that was wrong? It was back in March that I found myself sitting at the piano focusing on these ancient words and improvising a melody. It quickly became a refrain that I could use whenever I wanted to pray. Or a refrain I could return to between prayers. I hope that churches might use it this way, a repeated prayer that is sung by the congregation, a way of drawing people together punctuating other prayers or periods of silence. Though these are words of yearning, for me they are also words of comfort because they make me remember the simplicity of my trust in God.
